Summary

This position is located within the USDA, ARS, Field Organization, Pacific West Area, Western Human Nutrition Research Center, Obesity Metabolism Unit, in Davis, CA.

In this position, you will conduct nutrition interventions, that contribute to dietary and physical activity recommendations that will prevent obesity and related metabolic disorders.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years.

Duties

Help
  • Schedules and prepares human volunteers for specific metabolic, body composition of physiologic procedures, explains and demonstrates the various tests and provides encouragement during testing.
  • Collects test result data, performs statistical analysis, interprets research results, and prepares routine reports for presentation or publication of research findings.
  • During test procedures, monitors the subjects to ensure data obtained are reliable and accurate, and that tests are performed safely by using and interpreting electrocardiographs, blood pressure, heart rate and visual observation for fatigue.
  • Calibrates the instruments in accordance with established procedures prior to and during testing and assists in the maintenance of instruments and appropriate supplies.
  • Serves as part of a research team assisting with basic and applied research in the physiology and biochemistry of energy balance.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below:

Basic Requirements:
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in assisting with research in physiology to measure metabolic energy expenditure of humans; collecting and analyzing samples related to the metabolic energy expenditure of humans; recording and evaluating scientific data; and operating laboratory equipment of instruments.
OR
Education:
Successful completion of one (1) full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree. Related degrees may include physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biology, biomedical sciences, or anatomy.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA):
Completion of a bachelor's degree, with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, as described above. S.A.A. is based on (1) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.0 or higher) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 full years of undergraduate study; OR (2) A grade point average of B (a GPA of 3.5 or higher) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; OR (3) Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR (4) Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.

A combination
of specialized experience and education as described above.

Physical Demands: The physical demands are generally minimal, such as demonstrating equipment by either walking on the treadmill or cycling on an ergometer. Occasionally, requires heavy lifting or climbing ladders.

Work Environment: The work Is performed primarily in the laboratory, some field studies may be required to collect data and samples from various populations. The employee observes normal safety precautions when working with electrical instruments and heavy equipment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
